Survivorship Study
The results of a two-year, in-depth cancer survivorship study conducted by CCS and funded by the Texas Cancer Council were released in the Fall of 2007.  The 551 cancer survivors who completed the detailed survey give the results a +/- 5% confidence rating for representing all cancer survivors in Tarrant County.  Key highlights include:

  • The number of cancer survivors working full time decreased 25% after a cancer diagnosis.   The number who were disabled or too ill to work increased 17% and the number who retired increased 6%.
  • The annual income of cancer survivors earning over $30,000 decreased after their diagnosis.  The number of cancer survivors with annual income under $20,000 increased by 11%.
  • 16% of survivors have had a health service they were not able to get after their diagnosis.  The number one need cited by 51% of these respondents was dental services.
  • Cancer survivors are twice as likely as the general population to miss a mortgage or rent payment.
  • 14% of survivors reported that their caregivers needed help.
  • The top five needs reported by cancer survivors were:
    1. Help dealing with the lack of energy and tiredness
    2. Help with advice about food and diet
    3. Help dealing with their loss of concentration or memory
    4. Help with information about services and benefits
    5. Help with the fear about the cancer spreading or returning
  • Financial problems and isolation have a negative impact on quality of life.
